Our Halloween costumes this year originated from our huge Trip to the Moon birthday parties this past July! My son loves space and, honestly, my 1 year old daughter loves everything and anything! I decided to celebrate their birthdays with a lunar party inspired by the 1902 silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune. My husband and I watched the film together for the first time in a college film class. I fell in love with film instantly. The imaginative and inventive film is a very theatrical and whimsical work of art. For the birthday party, I had sewn photo props that resembled some of the props used in the film. I decided to expand upon these props for our Halloween costumes.
My 3 year old son dressed up as a selenite, a moon inhabitant. My daughter dressed up as a living star, another moon inhabitant from the film. I wanted the costumes to be somewhat similar and to have a modern look, so I had both kids wear halographic leggings from Baby Teith and kept the designs simple. The final products were so out of this world! They were eye catching and absolutely adorable!
My husband and I also wore similar outfits for trick or treating and while attending a costume contest at Wicker Park Boo-Palooza. Guess what!? We won 1 out of 5 prizes given out for “Best Family Halloween Costumes”! It was fantastic! We had named ourselves “Moon People” to keep our costume explanation simple. It did the trick and people loved them!
