My mom and her friends started a pumpkin carving party tradition when I was a little girl. The tradition was always so much fun! A pumpkin carving party is the perfect excuse to eat and drink all the yummy fall offerings, while creating your Halloween decor with friends and family! I usually have our pumpkin carving party inside, but our new home has a fabulous courtyard off the kitchen I couldn’t wait to have an autumn party in!

After having our front door decorated, it was time to think about Halloween costumes! My son and daughter are fascinated with all things shiny and sparkly. They also recently discovered geodes and suggested being one for Halloween! I was completely on board! We decided my son would be a golden nugget, my daughter would be an amethyst geode and the parents would be geologists. Everyone was so excited!
Have you ever tried to purchase a rock costume? They don’t exist, so I decided to brush up on my paper mâché skills and make my son and daughter’s costumes myself! I always love the challenge of a new art medium!
I LOVED how the costumes turned out! It was so much fun trying to create a rock texture with the paper mache! Plus, my kids loved helping me embellish the completed forms with paint and acrylic ice crystals. I was surprised to find that people recognized the geode costume immediately! However, people were not quite sure about the golden nugget costume… people guessed meteor, planet, sun, astroid. I guess those were all pretty close! My son started to get an attitude by the end of trick or treating, rolling his eyes when people didn’t know what he was. Ha! Four year olds!
